SOUTH ISLAND RHYTHM KINGS

At the nucleous of the South Island Rhythm Kings is the Father/Son team of Lazy MIKE MALLON on Vocals

and Harmonica, and CARSON MALLON on Guitar and Vocals, creating a musical bond

and a fresh spin on early Electric Blues.

With their good friend, and long time colaborator DAN "Piano Dano" DUBE' on Keys adding some Blues seasoning, RICKY RENOUF layin' it down on Stand Up Bass, and the "Groove Doctor" NICK DOKTER on Drums,

all locking in to drive the bottom end

“It has been said the blues is a language we all speak. From an empty wallet to a cold side of the bed, we all experience the blues in some way. It is the expression, or the dialects, that vary from region to region. The searing slide guitar of the Mississippi Delta, the swamp-ridden Louisiana Blues, the uptown horn arrangements of Texas and the West Coast, the soul-stirring electrified harmonica from Chicago; these sounds have gone on to influence the world of music for decades.

It is from these traditions that the South Island Rhythm Kings draw their inspiration. In a modern world of digital excess, this is a group of musicians who present a repertoire of old-school, real-deal blues music. You will not find any meaningless virtuosity on the new recording, only the pure expression of blues being reared on the stretch of Highway 1 from Nanaimo down to Victoria. This is the blues of Vancouver Island.”   Carson Mallon '19

This album, sixth for harmonica player “Lazy” Mike Mallon, and fourth with son Carson, is a collection of Classic Electric Blues material, comprised of original compositions and a selection of cover tunes. It was recorded at Lo-Speed Studio in Duncan, BC. The group strived for a LO-FI MONO style of recording akin to the electric blues of the 1950’s and ‘60’s, and thus, to preserve the energy of their live show, recorded live off the floor.

“Nice to hear someone actually claiming to be a Blues artist and actually playing the Blues”

Mike Hogan – Editor - Nanaimo Blues Society Monthly Newsletter Oct 2019

My Honey Bunny and I saw the South Island Rhythm Kings at the Osborne Bay pub last evening and they were great! Mike is rocking as hard as he ever has and part of that is due to his son Carson tearing it up on guitar and vocals. Carson plays without a pick and has great tone. He's really nailing the sound for these guys and plays tons of tasty licks. He's not flashy but a true Blues band doesn't require that or really even need that! Carson plays all the right stuff at the right time with the right tone. Gotta love that! Now that he's getting older he's starting to look like a Blues veteran (wearing shades helps with that).

I had a nice conversation with Carson and told him how much I liked his style and playing.

So very honored to be included in this list!
